Design science research (DSR) in Information Systems (IS), as we refer to it today, has been with us for nearly forty years, e.g., (Nunamaker, 1971, Chen, 1976, Bonczek et al., 1979). Papers in recent decades have been introduced, defined, and provided guidance for producing and publishing DSR outcomes (Walls et al., 1992, March and Smith, 1995, Hevner et al., 2004, Gregor and Jones, 2007, Peffers et al., 2007, Kuechler and Vaishnavi, 2008, Hevner and Chatterjee, 2010, Gregor and Hevner, 2013).

The objective of this track is to emphasize and find IS researchers to accomplish more in terms of DSR in IS’s application domain areas, the development of artifacts that can be practically applied to the solution of real world problems, development of recent theories of DSR and DSR-related methodologies. The topics are follows but not limited to:

  • Development of DSR artifacts for solving research problems in application domain such as disaster management, healthcare, mobile systems, knowledge management, etc.
  • DSR-related methodologies for developing artifacts in any exemplar DSR efforts.
  • DSR efforts that show admirable and imitable processes to produce high quality publishable outcomes.
  • DSR methodologies and outcomes that clearly differentiate DSR in IS from other disciplines (e.g., construction, engineering and architecture).
  • Papers that engage IS researchers and/or practitioners across disciplinary boundaries to produce applicable artifacts.
  • Issues on usability aspect of DSR artifacts in IS research.
  • Theory or guidance for the production of applicable DSR contributions that merit publication in the best journals.
  • Papers on DSR progress in other IS-related fields such as accounting information systems, business intelligence, social informatics, techno-entrepreneurship, information retrieval, big data, social media, etc.
  • Issue on verification and validation of DSR artifacts.
  • Papers that leave the social science paradigm to argue convincingly for DSR contribution other than truth, e.g., beauty, novel invention, etc.
  • Recent review papers on interesting topics related to DSR in IS progress.

Track Descriptions

The success or failure of Information Systems can be traced back to the very understanding of the IS developers on the social and human behaviour of the intended users of the systems.  Every society has its own norms and this uniqueness makes the design and development of an IS impossible to be a one-size fits all solution.  Human behaviour refers to the range of acts exhibited by humans and which are influenced by culture, attitudes, emotions, values, ethics, authority, rapport, hypnosis, persuasion, coercion and/or genetics. While behaviour of people can fall within a range of acceptable limits, it bears no meaning if it is not directed to others.

On the other hand, social behaviour which is a more advanced action is specifically directed at other people and shed meanings. The acceptability of behaviour is evaluated relative to social standard and regulated by various means of social control. The behaviour of humans is studied by the academic disciplines of psychiatry, psychology, social work, sociology, economics, and anthropology. Information systems celebrate this multiple and diverse interaction of disciplines, hence understanding and having insights into the social and human behaviour is indeed significant and crucial towards any IS research.

This track welcomes all papers which discuss this issue not limiting to its effect or impact on IS.

Track Description:

Human-computer interaction (HCI) studies a human and a machine in communication and interaction that may occur in contexts. Understanding of both the machine and the human side is the key to make the symbiosis successful. HCI has drawn interests from researchers, educators, and practitioners from different disciplines, as it is naturally an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary area. It essentially deals with the design, evaluation, adoption, and use of information technology, with a common focus on improving user performance and experience. New and exciting research opportunities are emerging, including issues and challenges concerning people’s interactions with various information technologies that can be examined from an organizational, managerial, psychological, social, or cultural perspective. To better utilize today’s information technologies, we need to better understand users, their tasks within different contexts, and the interplay among users, tasks, and contexts/environments. This track aims to receive research papers that contribute to the extension and enrichment of HCI knowledge at and for an individual, work group, organizational or industry, or societal level. Critical papers that challenges the current HCI assumption, methods, models and practices are welcome.

Possible topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

  • The perceptual, behavioral, cognitive, motivational, and affective/emotional aspects of humans and their interaction with IT/IS

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Darshana Sadera Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

Track Description:

Enterprise Systems (ES) have become an integral part of business for most enterprises around the world. ES are becoming more and more inter-organizational. ES represent the largest IS investment an organization is likely to make, require a significant investment of organizational energy and resources. The modern ES have evolved to include support for a variety of front office and inter-organizational activities and processes, such as customer relationship management (CRM) and supply chain management (SCM). These ES-related solutions have been integrated, embedded or closely coupled with on-demand services. The design of such large integrated systems represents a major technical challenge, requiring new ways of thinking about business processes, system development, and enterprise architecture. A paradigm shift took place: the functionality of enterprise systems has new software models such as Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), Softwareas a Service (SaaS) and Cloud Computing, provided on-demand to clients via the Internet. Part of this paradigm shift is an increase degree of provided functionality. In addition, Mobile access via smart-phones and tablets also affects enterprise systems. The rapid technological development of ES and its indispensable role in organizations warrant novel and forward-looking papers.

Business Process Management (BPM) has also evolved into a widely deployed, contributes to an increased organizational efficiency and effectiveness. The issues governance, methods, information technology, culture, people, and strategic alignment require extensions of the current BPM capabilities and of our understanding of the related opportunities, challenges, and theories. In particular, a better understanding of the theoretical underpinning of BPM and its integration into the landscape of IS theories and artifacts is required.

Thus, we particularly encourage submissions that propose and critically evaluate new ways of thinking on the current status of BPM and all related issues from a cross boundary perspective, including vendors and organizations using ES as much as an exploration of the future research needs. We are open to a wide variety of research approaches including quantitative and qualitative, empirical, conceptual and analytical approaches such as case studies, action research, surveys, experiments, design science-oriented, and economic research.
